Welcome to St John's Foundation Stage!

Welcome to Foundation Stage; the team is made up of

Miss Brunt, Mrs Clements, Mrs Bee, Mrs Pickering, Mrs Roys, Mrs Foy, Miss Green, Miss Gill and Mrs Wesley

Our FS1 class is named Curious Creators and our F2 classes Are Enquirers and Inquisitors. Our curriculum aims to develop children's joy and love of learning by encouraging them to ask questions and find answers at every opportunity.

In FS2 we have 60 children split into two classes for carpet sessions and PE. For the rest of the time we mix together in our large classroom space.

In FS1 we have a large classroom space to explore.

Both groups have time to access our wonderful outdoor space.

The children learn through a ‘free flow’, play based curriculum with a range of child initiated and adult-led activities taking place both inside and out.

Please find below information regarding the two apps we regularly use in FS to communicate and share our learning experiences with parents!

The children have an on-line Tapestry Learning Journal which is used to record photos, observations and comments in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us.  It is a wonderful way for parents to keep informed about their child’s learning instantly through email notifications.

Parents can add their own observations so we can gain an insight into their child’s interests and achievements outside of school, which can provoke some lovely discussions - if you require a form please ask a member of staff.

We also use class Dojo. We use this to communicate more general information for the whole class for example examples of themes or texts we are exploring, or what we have covered in maths to enable you to support the children more readily at home. You can message the class teacher directly through this App if you have queries.

Reading Books

FS1 children will be given the opportunity to borrow books from the class reading library.

Sharing books and stories is fundamental to develop a lifelong love of reading and we hope that you can support us in this by reading to and with your child regularly.

FS2 school reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Children will be given a school reading book which matches their phonics ability closely.  A box of bedtime books will be placed outside regularly to enable you to change them at your convenience.

We will make a note of any children that read regularly (5 or more times a week) at home and they will be entered into a prize draw on Fridays. In F2 we expect children to be reading their school book regularly to give them the opportunity to  practise, rehearse and consolidate their reading skills. Reading the same book many times will develop their sight reading and fluency.

In FS2 we use word wheels to support children's learning of tricky vocabulary, we will issue a new word wheel in line with where we are with our phonics learning and if the children have mastered the last word wheel.

Once your child recognises all the words on wheel one for example you could encourage them to find them within the texts they are reading and practise spelling them.

Tricky vocabulary are the words which are not phonetically regular.

Phase 2 tricky words are -

I, no, to, go, the, into.

Phase 3 tricky words are -

he, she, we, me, be, you, are, was, all, her, they, my
