Literacy

Not all heroes wear capes...

What do you think this means?

Read this story together and then see whether you understand what this means...

How many of the real-life heroes can you remember from the story?

Talk with your grown-up about why you think that we call them real-life heroes.

Make a list of some of the real-life heroes that you can remember... can you think of any that weren't in the story?

Have a go at writing your ideas yourself. Remember that you don't need to spell everything properly - have a go at sound-talking the words that you want to write, listening for the sounds that you can hear, and writing those down.

e.g.

vet  - they will possibly hear all the sounds in this word... v - e - t      but may not know how to write all of the letters.

firefighter - this is rather more tricky and includes sounds that we haven't taught them yet. They may sound it out

f - a - y - f - a - y - t - r (this will seem extremely wrong to most of you, but to us it shows that they are listening hard for sounds)

Some children may only hear the first sound - this is absolutely fine - encourage them to write just what they can hear and the you can make a note next to their writing of what they wanted their writing to say.

Remember all children work at different levels, some will hear a few sounds, others will make marks and tell you what it says others may be writing some simple words.
