Tricky Words

Tricky words are those that are not decdable using phonics skills andare taught in a different way.

Word Wheels

In class we introduce the tricky words within our phonics lessons. We also include them in word wheels for you to practise at home.

Word wheels are sent home for you to practice reading key words with your child. They have a mix of tricky and phonetic words. We will check the wheels once a week in school - if your child has mastered all the new words we have given them we will add more. Practising your word wheel regularly is important. It helps them to become familiar with the words and builds up instant recognition over time.

Try spotting word wheel words in your reading with your child - it will help them make the connection between the words they are practising and using them to read for themselves.

Once they can recognise all the words for that phase we then move them onto a spelling book to practice spelling the words in that phase.
