5.5.20 - Multiply 3-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers

Watch the videos using the links below to help you to remember how to multiply 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. There are also examples on your sheet. You can choose which method you use - either grid method or expanded column multiplication method.

If you use grid method, remember to partition the 3-digit number into hundreds, tens and ones, e.g. 523 = 500, 20 and 3

To multiply a multiple of ten by a 1-digit number, take the zero off the tens number (e.g. 30 becomes 3) and multiply it by the 1-digit number. Then multiply the answer by 10. E.g. 30 x 6.  3 x 6 = 18. 18 x 10 = 180.

To multiply by a multiple of a hundred, take both zeros off the hundreds number (e.g. 200 becomes 2) and multiply it by the 1-digit number. Then multiply the answer by 100. E.g. 200 x 4. 2 x 4 = 8. 8 x 100 = 800

Then complete all three pages of the activity below.

There is a word document version and a PDF version - use which ever one is best for you to access.

Don't worry if you can't to print out the sheets, work out the answers and write them onto paper. Use the class email to send me your work - you can take a photo or send it on a word document.
